You find yourself in august company when listening to Marspiter, at least for those of the neo-classical ambient music championed by Sophia, As All Die I Know, et al. The album is not as thunderous as Pettersson's marches and for the most part Marspiter encysts a dense nest of esoteric haunting that calls to mind, at moments, Raison d'EtrΩ. This isn't some copycat at work and while ghostly choirs lilt along windswept plains of horns and bloated drones Vigila etches its own niche, a minimalist desolation, a remnant or photograph of ancient war, tragic battlefields wrapped in a swarthy murk; yet even these are stripped of meaning, more metaphor than
faithful representation of one side, faction or country (the silk-screened disc even features such a wasteland, empty of bodies, hung with mordant cloud). The tracks bleed into each other, digesting the reverb and echoes to make the album more one whole movement than six distinguishable tracks.
