In this video, from Berklee Online’s Music Theory 301 course, instructor Paul Schmeling gives a rapid-fire review on the modal scales: Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, and Aeolian, Locrian. He draws out on the treble clef what differentiates these scales from regular major or minor scales, which is usually just one note that’s different. That note is called the characteristic note, and in the Lydian scale, for instance the 4th scale degree is the characteristic note, since it’s a half-step higher. He points out the characteristic note of each scale in this mode, and then plays the scales, demonstrating how just one note can make such a big difference, highlighting how something like the scale Locrian mode has sort of a “dark and foreboding” sound.

Paul Schmeling is a master pianist, interpreter, improviser, and arranger who has inspired countless students since he began teaching at Berklee in 1961. He has performed or recorded with jazz greats such as Clark Terry, Rebecca Parris, George Coleman, Carol Sloane, Frank Foster, Art Farmer, Herb Pomeroy, Phil Wilson, Dick Johnson and Slide Hampton. In the 1990s, the Paul Schmeling Trio released two inventive and critically acclaimed albums, interpreting the music of Hoagy Carmichael and songs associated with Frank Sinatra. Recently retired as chair of the piano department, he is co-author of the “Berklee Practice Method: Keyboard” (2001) and “Instant Keyboard” (2002) and the author of “Berklee Music Theory: Book 1.” He also authored Berklee Online’s very first online course with Music Theory 101.
