Guys, we’ve finally reached the sacred Maa Fullara Devi Temple! This right here is the main entrance to the temple complex. We actually took a small homestay nearby—which I’ll show you later in the video. But for now, let’s go and explore this divine temple.
This is the exact place where Goddess Sati’s lower lip is believed to have fallen.
This temple is also in the Birbhum district of West Bengal—a land known as “the land of red soil.” That’s because Birbhum has not just one, but five Shakti Peethas and two Siddha Peethas!
Here, Maa Adi Shakti is worshipped as Maa Phullara, which means “Blooming.”
The name 'Phullara' is often linked to the beauty of Goddess Sati’s lips—like blooming lotuses—or to the ever-blossoming, caring energy of the Goddess herself.
Interestingly, this temple is also known as Attahasa a name formed from the Sanskrit words Atta and Haasa, meaning “extreme loud laughter.”
It’s said that when Goddess Sati’s lip fell here, a powerful divine energy burst out—like a loud, cosmic laugh that echoed through the universe.
Inside the garbha griha—the sanctum—there’s no traditional vigraha now. Instead, you’ll see a massive sacred stone, around 15 to 18 feet wide, believed to represent the fallen lip.
Historical records say there was once a separate metal Vigraha inside the temple, different from the large stone that represents the lip. Around 1915, it was taken to the Bangiya Sahitya Parishad Museum in Kolkata. Years later, when the Vigraha was finally brought back and reinstalled at the temple, it was tragically stolen and lost forever.
Like every Shakti Peetha, this place also has a form of God Shiva to protect it. Here, He’s worshipped as Vishvesha Bhairava, which means 'Lord of the Universe.
At the heart of Fullara Shakti Peetha are the divine energies of the Goddess, as Maa Phullara, and her eternal consort, God Shiva in His Bhairava form—Lord Vishwesha.
The story of Fullara Devi Temple begins with the powerful history of Goddess Sati, God Shiva, and the Daksha Yagna. This story explains the origin of all 51 Shakti Peethas across India and nearby regions.
Goddess Sati, the daughter of Prajapati Daksha and an incarnation of Goddess Adi Shakti, married God Shiva—but Daksha didn’t approve of God Shiva's appearance and lifestyle. To insult them, Daksha arranged a big yagna (fire ritual) and invited all gods—but left out God Shiva and Goddess Sati on purpose.
Even though she wasn't invited, Goddess Sati went to the yagna. But there, her father insulted God Shiva in front of everyone. Hurt and angry, Goddess Sati gave up her life by jumping into the fire.
When God Shiva heard what happened, he was heartbroken and furious. In his rage, he created Virabhadra, destroyed the yagna, and punished Daksha. Then God Shiva lifted Goddess Sati’s body and started his fierce Tandava—the dance of destruction—shaking the whole universe.
To calm him down, God Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to cut Goddess Sati’s body into pieces. Wherever the pieces fell, those places became Shakti Peethas—sacred spots filled with divine energy.
Here in Birbhum, it is believed that Goddess Sati’s lower lip fell. That’s why this place became the Fullara or Attahas Shakti Peetha.
The name Phullara means "Blooming"—linked to the beauty of Goddess Sati’s lips, like blooming lotuses. And Attahas, meaning "loud laughter," is said to reflect the powerful energy that burst out when her lip fell—like a divine cosmic laugh.
Because the lip is also connected to speech and sound, this temple is also believed to bless devotees with clear speech and eloquence.
