As digital designers, we strive to create products that are a natural extension of people’s lives. Today, we’re far from that.

The era of Experience Design ushered in thinking about a user’s context while interacting with products. Time and location are two major inputs in our user journey’s today, i.e. the ‘morning commute.’ Currently, technology captures these contexts at scale and a new set of predictive products have emerged, but innovations in areas like wearables are starting to gather emotional signals as a third input. We will see a great shift from Human Centered Design to genuine Empathetic Design with this added input.

In this session, we will discuss practical considerations on designing for this next generation of products. We will talk about digital ecosystems that work together, ethical implications and technology advances that can help get us there. This is our next design era—understanding people’s emotional states and providing experiences that empathize with them.
