An examination of the demonstration Photoshop file is made. It is comprised of a series of pixel and vector based layers.


1:22 - Move Tool
By default, Photoshop requires that a layer is first selected within the Layers panel before it can be moved around the canvas using the Move Tool.

With the Move Tool selected, the Auto-Select feature can be found in the Options bar. If this series of options running across the top of Photoshop is not seen, activate it by selecting Options from the Window menu. When Auto-Select is active, clicking on an element within the canvas will automatically select that layer within the Layers panel.

Auto-Select can be temporarily turned on/off by holding down the Command/Control key while using the Move Tool.

The Move Tool can move and target both pixel and/or vector based layers.

3:15 - Path Selection Tool
This tool only works on vector based layers.

An individual vector based Photoshop layer can contain multiple paths. The Path Selection Tool allows for the individual selection and moving of such paths.

Within the options bar is a Select option that contains two settings. The first, "Active Layers", only allows for the selection of paths within layers that are active within the Layers panel. The second, "All Layers", allows for the selection of paths within any layers of the Photoshop document.

5:23 - Direct Selection Tool
This tool only works on vector based layers.

The Direct Selection Tool is designed to select single or multiple anchor points within single or multiple paths.

Like the Path Selection Tool, this tool also contains the Select option with the same two settings.
