It’s always better to keep an even keel in a high-pressure situation. Surgeless fan design protects pressurized fans from vibration-inducing surge situations.

Surge, or pulsing, in medium- to high- volume pressurized fans causes vibration that can be extremely damaging to your industrial fan application. Surgeless fan design keeps the volume low so that the fan operation remains steady even in high-pressure applications. Once you control the volume, you no longer need to worry about surge. In this one-minute video, Application Engineer Chet White demonstrates surgeless fan design.

Surge is a condition where a fan actually pulses. So, you’re climbing up the curve, the system has more pressure than the fan can handle, it passes the peak of that curve, and fights back and forth across the peak. And so you’ll see it in the sidewalls of the housing. They’ll pulse out they’ll pulse in, they pulse out, they pulse in. Same thing is happening inside that housing on that wheel, and that causes vibration. Vibration shakes your fan apart, a really bad situation you want to avoid. Surge is a condition that only exists in medium- to high-volume pressurized fans. The fan that we’re standing next to is a surgeless design. Now the reason is, while it is a pressurized application, you have pressure in this fan somewhere between 40 and 60 inches of water in this specific application. The volume is low enough that this fan can control all volumes from 0 CFM up to maybe 2000 CFM with no cause for concern of surge because it’s classified as a low volume fan.
