Do you know what social traffic is in your Google Analytics reports?

There are two ways you can look at social traffic -- the old way is to post blog articles as links on your social media accounts. This allows people to click on it then land on your website. These kinds of traffic are tagged under social traffic.

However, this is not the preferred way of most social networks already. For example, Facebook doesn't want you to leave their website (or app). If you are sharing content on these platforms, it's best to share it natively.

This is the same reason why a link post to your website with a YouTube video embedded on it will not perform as well as the same video posted on Facebook.

The same goes for articles. Facebook released Instant Article feature that allows you to connect your website's articles to Facebook. That way, whenever you publish a post, an Instant Article variation is also created on your Facebook Page. You can then use this to distribute your content instead of linking to your website.

This is the more preferred way to look at social traffic.

At the end of the day, it's all about the user. Instead of letting them jump through one website to another, it's much easier to "be present" where they are. After all, if you're doing your content marketing right, your articles aren't selling to them. So it's much better to provide them value where they already are.

Also, remember that if you are advertising on social (e.g. Facebook ads), by default, these show up under social traffic as well. You have to create a custom channel grouping if you want to separate them.

For example, I use the name "Paid Social" for advertisements on social media. This separates it from the Paid Traffic.
