“AP VoteCast has the most revealing number on the outcome of the Iowa caucuses. This race was always going to belong to former President Donald Trump. Why? Seven out of ten of Trump's backers said they knew all along that they would support the former president. With a number that high. It was always going to be difficult, if not impossible for challengers to unseat Trump. This tells us several key things about the GOP electorate. One, Trump has managed to remake the Republican Party in his own image. He lost Iowa in 2016, but now we see that Iowa's firmly behind him. Two, challengers like Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy, who are always going to have limited upside because so many people had already decided to go with Trump. There wasn't much they could do to persuade these voters. And third, and perhaps most important, as we see Trump's grip increasing within the GOP. The big question is can he expand his coalition in the general election? If people knew all along in the Republican Party they liked Trump. What will Democrats and independents think about when they voted against him in 2020? Are they also going to be open minded, or are they going to stick to where they were four years ago?”

STORYLINE:
Donald Trump cultivating a deep network of support in Iowa over his three presidential runs and that showed in the leadoff caucuses.

About 7 in 10 Iowans who caucused for Trump on Monday night said they've known all along they'd support the man who has remade the Republican Party through his “Make America Great Again” political movement.

His challengers tried to carve out their own coalitions. But none could match the demographic edges enjoyed by Trump in this year’s first presidential contest, according to the findings from AP VoteCast.

The survey of more than 1,500 voters who said they planned to participate in the caucuses was conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
