The Koch tribes rose to power in the 16th century AD after the fall of the Khen Dynasty. According to the Puranas & the Tantras, these Koch tribes were referred to as 'kuvashas' or the original tribes of this land. The Kuvashas are Tibeto mongoloid by race & according to Edward Gait, have migrated from southern Siberia.Again, medieval facts reveal that when Parashurama vowed to vanquish all kshatriyas, many fled eastwards & settled with these Koch tribes & have adopted themselves as Rajbongshis today. Amoungst them was one Haria Mondol. On orders from the Koch king of Darrang Samudra Narayan, the Darrang Rajbonshaboli was written in the 17th century by Surjyakhori Daibogya. On papyrus bark, the manuscript vividly refers & describes with pali script writings and illustrations of the Koch legacy. Haria Mondol later subjugate & attack Phulguri, Luki, Ouguri etc. & became the chieftan. His son Bisu, the master chieftan declares himself Biswa Singha of the Koch Dynasty and leader of the Koch tribes & establishes his capital in the Chikanjhar forests bordering Bhutan of today. After his death, his able sons Malla Deva,Sukladhwaja, Gohain Kamala takes over the reign of the Koch Kingdom, shifts the old capital from Chikanjhar forest to the western banks of today's Sonkoch river & names it KochBehar.Malladeva declares himself Nara Narayan,Sukladhwaja as Yuvaraaj. Many historical events and victories took place of the Koches with the Ahoms, who were at that time the first intruders into these golden valleys of Brahmaputra from the eastern foreign lands. The Ahoms were crushed and retreated back Sukladhwaj, due to his magnificent skillful warfare tactics, that the Ahoms named him Chilarai. The great Vaishnava saint Sri Sri Sankaradeva was fleeing and restless from the wrath of the Ahoms and throughout his entire lifespan never found refuge to spread the cult of Assamese tradition, culture, language & the words of Lord Krishna. It was the Koches under the benign consideration of the Koch King Nara Narayan that asylum was granted to Sri Sri Sankaradeva where he could spread his benign knowledge of Vaishnavite culture from the satra at todays Madhupur in north Bengal. There was inter marriage relationship between Chilarai & Sankardeva too.The Kamakhya Temple built by Naraka and later destroyed by Kala Pahar was rebuilt by Nara Naranarayan during this time. Frequent wars in the west with the Nawab of Gaur was inflicted but Chilarai was defeated & on one such occasion was released by the mother of the Nawab after curing her daughter from a serious illness. But Chilarai on the the banks of the Ganga breathed his last. Nara Narayan lived like an ascetic and did not marry till late in life. Raghudev, the son of Chilarai announced proclaimation as the next successor to the Koch Dynasty throne & began inflicting the central territories of the Koch Kingdom. Seeing the grave situation, Naranarayan divided the Koch Kingdom onto two.The west of Sonkoch river with the capital was retained by Naranarayan & to its east was given to Raghudev, the son of Chilarai as Koch Hajo. This again was divided into the Darrang Koch,Bijni Koch & Beltola Koch kingdoms. In the 18th century, the present palace at Koch Behar was built by the descendents of Naranarayan, Maharaja Nripendra Narayan. The last vassel Koch king was Jagatdwipendra Narayan during the British rule who died without any descendents & Koch Behar was annexed to North Bengal. The Koch Rajbonshis are given the status as schedule caste with much to think for themselves. The old town of Koch Behar has lost its old glory and the beautiful Koch Behar capital has been degraded into ruins by vested politics of Bengal. The main alter of Lord Krishna of Madan Mohan temple is stolen and lost but on request by the local Rajbongshis, Maharani Gayatri Devi, the sister of Maharaja Jagatdwipendra Narayan and queen of Jaipur, Rajasthan donated a new alter of Lord Krishna. The Koch kingdom of Raghudev in the eastern parts remained scattered. To the south of todays Assam state, some are annexed to east Pakistan after liberation and formation of Bangladesh and the rest as Jamindari/mouzadari estates in Mongoldoi, Beltola & Bijni. Although the Koch Rajbongshis are the original and the largest populated people in the state of Assam under one single canopy, yet we are neglected and mislead by false promises by the Govt of India for our status demands as schedule tribes of Assam. We need to carry on this revolution with deeds and capacities of any nature for the interest to the our community the Koch Rajbongshis,so as to convince the Government of India to respect us and grant us at the earliest the son of the soil status like the other scheduled tribes of Assam keeping in mind the importance of our strong historical background of our Koch people and the community-Koch Rajbongshi.
