After the protests in May and June of 2020 and long building anger that finally burst at the seams in the US, the song Kharabit Nineveh, a song about the plight of Assyrian statelessness, kept coming into my mind. I sat and read the words and was deeply moved by how aptly they express what our nation is experiencing now. The lyrics and melody, written by Yousip Jacob and Belis Daniel, convey exhaustion, struggle, generational pain, and hopelessness.
Jacob writes that if you dig under the ruins of his city, you’ll see his people’s suffering. You will hear a voice calling for his mother, who suffered for him, so he could keep his name/identity. He says he will shout with a loud voice so the world will hear. He wants the soil of his land to be mixed with his blood. His rights have been denied and he feels hopeless.
While singing today, I spontaneously changed some of the words in the third verse. It felt right to say we WILL have a home, we WILL build it. Even though, in the next verse I go back to the original words which say that our rights have been denied, and there is no hope left.
While that causes a conflict in the message, I felt it was more true than constant despair. In these struggles for equality and justice, Hope and Hopelessness rise and fall like night and day. You can feel both as a truth within 24 hours.
If you feel hopeless now, know that will change. We will make it change.

Assyrian-American singer Rachel Sarah Thomas blends folkloric and pop music from Iraq, Iran, and Syria with funk, soul, and rock n' roll. Check out her EP Sheekar, available on all streaming platforms - Link here --https://linktr.ee/rachelsarahthomas
Raised with a deep appreciation for her cultural roots, Thomas grew up speaking and writing in Neo-Aramaic - a language that most people believe is extinct. While immersed in the dance, liturgical, and folk music traditions of her Assyrian family, she discovered her passion for music.
Thomas spent years exploring her musical identity in the vibrant independent music scene of Chicago. She embarked on her electrifying pop project, KSRA, and collaborated with esteemed artists such as Thelonious Martin and NYLO, and even worked with rap legend Talib Kweli. She also produced a record with the Grammy-winning duo, Tha Bizness. Despite her success, she realized there wasn't a space where she felt fully represented. So, she created her newest project, Sheekar released in February 2024.
Sheekar (pronounced She Cɛr) is a celebration of Rachel's blended identity, a powerful East-meets-West fusion that proudly showcases the beauty and richness of her culture. Her music is a testament to the shared experiences of people from different backgrounds, and she hopes to inspire non-Assyrian people to appreciate and enjoy her culture while also introducing Assyrian people to a fresh and exciting take on their own music.
