We took a little trip down to the cabin this past week to unwind and do some turkey hunting. After grilling up some pork tenderloin and baking fresh biscuits, I split some kindling and fired up the old cast iron wood stove. As the sun dipped below the trees, the peaceful night was broken by loud, eerie howls—coyotes in the distance, louder than I’ve ever heard them.

The next morning I hit the field a little late but got set up just in time. Three gobblers came in, and after some calling and patience, I was able to harvest a nice bird. But what happened afterward was something I’d never witnessed in all my years hunting...

Instead of fleeing, the second turkey circled the downed bird, lowered his wings, and even stood on top of it—acting strange for nearly 20 minutes. It was one of the wildest hunting moments I’ve experienced.

Back at the cabin, a warm fire, hot coffee, and the smell of bacon cooking rounded out a truly memorable morning.
