Found in Oak woodland but also on other deciduous trees and on hedgerow and garden shrubs. Lime green with a pale yellow stripe along the back. The females have a long ovipositor (egg-laying tube).

Meconema thalassinum is a small bush cricket, reaching only 20 mm long, including the female's long ovipositor, although the antennae may reach a further 40 mm forwards . It lives in the foliage of trees, including oaks, where females lay eggs singly under the bark, and where males make an almost inaudible noise by drumming on leaves. M. thalassinum is a host for the parasitic worm Spinochordodes tellinii. The parasite is able to change the behaviour of the insect making it more attracted to water when it is close to water. Our only completely arboreal species, except for the recently arrived, and wingless, Southern Oak Bush-cricket, it is probably one of the least often seen crickets. However, the adults do fly well and are attracted to lights at night, occasionally turning up in moth traps or on windows. The Oak Bush-cricket is carnivorous and feeds on smaller invertebrates. Karlarnir mynda hljóð með að nudda saman afturfótunum. Kerlingin er stærri en karlinn en bæði hafa svartar rákir á hliðum búksins sem annars er svona ljósbrúnn. Beinvængjur eru meðalstór til stór skordýr, stundum mjög stór. Þær hafa sterka bitkjálka og meðallanga til mjög langa fálmara. Tvö pör vængja, framvangir mjóir leðurkenndir, en afturvængir breiðir og himnukenndir sem liggja samanbrotnir undir framvængjunum í hvíld. Eru stundum vænglausar. Beinvængjur hafa stóra og mjög sterka afturfætur sem þær nota til að stökkva með kröftuglega. Á afturenda eru tvö stutt skott. Flestar beinvængjur nærast á plöntum og eru sumar þekktar fyrir að valda tjóni á gróðri. Aðrar eru alætur. Hið alkunna suð engisprettna myndast þegar þær nudda saman fram- og afturvæng eða lærum við framvængina, en það er misjafnt eftir tegundum. Það eru fyrst og fremst karldýr sem mynda hljóðin. Bush crickets are spreading in prodigious leaps as one of the more harmless effects of climate change. Species that were unknown in Britain 10 years ago are now becoming established.
Others that used to be rare and confined to a few southern region locations have become more numerous and have spread into the Midlands and beyond. Unlike sickle-bearing bush-cricket, it certainly couldn't have made its own way there, the very short wings of this species rendering it flightless. Lifts on vehicles transported through the Channel Tunnel is thought to be how Meconema became Britain's first new orthopteroid for 60 years on making a Surrey debut six years ago. Crickets and Grasshoppers belong to the order Orthoptera and the current UK list contains around 30 species, including several known migrants/accidentals. Nottinghamshire currently has 15 species on it's list. The Oak Bush Cricket is fairly commonly distributed across much of Nottinghamshire, probably being most common in the Sherwood Forest area. It does occasionally turn up in more suburban areas and is regularly found on the walls of Worksop Priory.
