It is said that a hunter once fired a bullet that lodged into a tree. Years later, when the tree was being cut, the bullet struck the chainsaw blade and launched out at high speed, fatally injuring the lumberjack.
To test if this could actually happen, these guys first checked the speed of the chainsaw blade — it was around 61 miles per hour.
Then after setting up the experiment site, they fired a bullet into the tree trunk, and prepared it for cutting.
When the saw blade made contact with the bullet, it got ejected at a speed of 132 feet per second — which was quite low to cause any significant injury.
Next they brought in an industrial chainsaw that was eight times more powerful and repeated the same experiment.
This time the bullet flew out at 200 feet per second. That speed could have caused some injury but anything under 400 feet per second isn’t considered fatal.
