Building a relationship with a coach before you hit them up for details on what they are prepared to offer as a scholarship is critical.

You need to give the coach the opportunity to get to KNOW, LIKE & TRUST you before you go asking them for money. The same goes for you. You need to understand the college, coach and culture is going to be the right fit for you before you go asking them to make a decision on money.

Be patient and build the relationship. Even if there is no spots available for you right now in a particular program, if you build a good relationship with the coaches and a spot opens up later (this happens a lot), then the coach might come back to you.

The whole sports scholarship process has a lot of moving parts and athletes will pull out of scholarship commitments for a whole range of reasons.

It happens more often than you think...

So...

#1 - build good relationships with all the coaches you connect with, because you never know where it might lead.

#2 - don't be in too big a rush to discuss money, get to know the coach and more importantly let them get to know you. The better they know you, the more they like you, the more you are the right player for them, the harder they will work to get you on their roster.

The process takes time, relax about the process, however still follow-up regularly.
