Sheffield Walk: Outside Bramall Lane | Sheffield United F.C.【4K】

Описание к видео Sheffield Walk: Outside Bramall Lane | Sheffield United F.C.【4K】

We take a special tour around Bramall Lane, home to Sheffield United Football Club. Built in 1855, it was originally used as a cricket ground, not hosting its first football match until 1862 - a charity match between Sheffield F.C. and Hallam F.C. Finally in 1889 Sheffield United F.C. was founded, named after the cricket team, and have played their home games at Bramall Lane ever since. With a capacity of just over 32,000 it is, at the time of writing, the 17th largest football stadium in England.

Sheffield United's nickname "The Blades" and their slogan "forged in steel" are an homage to the city of Sheffield's steel industry which played a significant role in the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century. The industry declined in the late 20th century due to international competition, hence the presence of various abandoned steelworks factories around the city.

The four stands are: the H E Barnes Stand (west), the John Street Stand (north), the Kop Stand (east) and the Tony Currie Stand (or South Stand). Just outside the South Stand are statues of Derek Dooley and Joe Shaw.

Derek Dooley lost his right leg at age 23 whilst playing as a striker for local rivals Sheffield Wednesday, but returned years later as a manager for the same club. Having been infamously sacked on Christmas Eve 1973 he switched allegiances and joined Sheffield United, initially as a commercial manager before later becoming a director, and later, chairman.

Joe Shaw made over 700 appearances as a player for Sheffield United across all competitions between 1945 and 1966, thus being one of very few players throughout history to have spent over two decades at the same club.

HOW TO GET TO THE STADIUM:

If arriving to Sheffield by train, the stadium is a 15-20 minute walk away. Turn left out of the station onto Sheaf Street. Stay on the right hand side as it becomes Shoreham Street after the fork. Now keep going straight on, then turn right at Cherry Street for the main entrance. Or for the executive suite take the earlier right at John Street.
