Soviet Women Flew 30,000 Combat Missions — The Germans Called Them 'Witches'

The Germans called them "Nachthexen" — Night Witches. They meant it as an insult. The Soviet women who flew 30,000 combat missions in obsolete biplanes took it as a badge of honor.

The 588th Night Bomber Regiment was the most extraordinary combat unit of World War II. An all-female Soviet aviation unit flying canvas-and-wood training aircraft against the most powerful military machine in history.

They had no parachutes. No radios. No guns. They flew in open cockpits in temperatures that reached -40°C. They navigated by starlight and attacked by moonlight.

And they terrified the Wehrmacht.
