Quick-n-Easy Projects #1: Switch Stands

A SHORT NOTE ON SWITCH STAND ASPECTS: The railroads were early leaders in industrial safety. In particular, they embraced the concept of “fail safe” – that is, equipment failures should result in a safe default. In the case of switch stands, this meant that, if the target is damaged or missing, the train should come to a stop. Therefore, the “safe to proceed” aspect is almost always a fully visible target. The D&RGW painted their targets yellow; and a single yellow light almost always means “Proceed at medium speed.”

I apologize for the relatively poor quality of this video! Because the parts are so small, and the work is so delicate, I recorded the video at the maximum zoom provided by my phone camera – I fear this stretched its capabilities to the very limit.
