THE SONGBIRDS:
The Danish soprano Ditte Andersen graduated in 2004 from the Royal Danish Academy of Opera in Copenhagen. She made her debut in Berlin with roles including Sophie, Fiakermilli, Susanna, and the Forest Bird. She has specialized in Mozart, Strauss, and baroque works in Paris, Strasbourg, Cologne, Montpellier, Aix, Brussels, Amsterdam, Lausanne, Budapest, Luxembourg, and Monaco, as well as singing regularly in Copenhagen and Stockholm in operatic and concert works.
Anna-Maria Panzarella was born in Grenoble in 1970 to Italian parents. She initially aimed to be a dancer before discovering her singing voice and attending the Genève Conservatory and the Royal College of Music in London. She made her stage debut as Frasquita in Genève. Her career accelerated in England (Leeds, London, Glyndebourne) and includes engagements throughout Europe, especially France (Aix, Bordeaux, Caen, Dijon, Lausanne, Liege, Lyon, Montpellier, Nancy, Paris). Her association with William Christie led to a focus in baroque music, which continued as a frequent collaborator with Christophe Rousset.
THE MUSIC: Mozart's 1775 pastoral opera seria "Il re pastore" K.208 is one of my favorites. It was commissioned for a visit by the Archduke of Austria to Salzburg, where it had its premiere. The small cast has three sopranos (Elisa, Tamiri, and the leading role of Aminta, written for a castrato) and two tenors. The plot revolves around Aminta's discovery that he is more than a simple shepherd, but in fact the heir to the throne of Sidon, and how he is torn between fulfilling that royal duty and his love for the shepherdess Elisa. Act One ends with a spectacular duet between the two characters — the soprano voices interweave elaborately and conclude with a long intricate double cadenza.
