Rope ascending for big guys using Adrian's method
Additionally since my last video, I've made a few minor modifications, however in the rope ascending world every single detail makes a huge difference in the efficiency and safety of the overall climb.
This time I've modified the position from "belayer" to "climber" on the grigri, thus I was able to pull the rope over the Tandem pulley much easier than before, the friction being less in the grigri.
A Klemheist knot is used first as an anchor for both, safety during ascent, hooking its webbing (to which I've added a shelf by girth hitching it) to a daisy chain connected to the harness, as well as a lanyard for the end of the climb, offering safety while removing the hooked items one by one.
The lanyard is hooked directly in the two harness loops, the daisy chain is hooked on an 8 kept vertically via the chest harness, and the 8 is connected to the belay loop in the harness.
The grigri is also hooked in the belay loop via a locking carabiner.
Two Petzl ascenders (during filming I had to remove them, I hooked them on the wrong foot), are used for offering hand and feet rest opportunities during the ascent.
A kroll hooked on the rope is what is holding the Tandem pulley in place.
When finished climbing up the rope and needed to lower myself, I attach the lanyard to the sling hooked via a Klemheist knot at the upper point on the rope, and having the slack removed in this lanyard I can begin removing items one by one: the two Petzl ascenders, the kroll, and finally, with the grigri engaged, I can lower myself holding the rope with the right hand over the grigri and with the left hand I drag down the rope the sling with Klemheist knot.
