The temple is dedicated to Sita, Rama, and Lakshmana.
It was built by the Gajapati Kings and is approximately 1000 years old.
According to legends, during the Dwaparayuga, when the Pandavas were exiled from their kingdom, they prayed to Lord Krishna for support during their Vanavasam. In response, Krishna gave them the idols of Sita, Rama, and Lakshmana, instructing them to worship these deities.
The Pandavas followed Krishna’s instructions and worshipped these idols. Later, while moving to a different place, they entrusted the Vaikhasana Priest Vedagarbha with the responsibility of continuing the worship.
During the Buddhist period, to protect the idols from demolition, the Vaikhasana priests buried them in a nearby pond.
In the 16th century AD, King Poosapati Sita Ramachandra of the Gajapati dynasty ruled the region. Villagers used to gather wood from the nearby forest for their livelihood.
One day, while villagers sought shelter under trees during heavy rain, an aged dumb lady (a devotee of Lord Rama) took shelter under a banyan tree. Lord Rama appeared before her and blessed her with speech by writing Beejaksharam (Alphabets) on her tongue.
Lord Rama instructed her to recover the Dwaparayuga idols from the nearby pond. The aged lady conveyed this message to the king, who then recovered the idols.
On Bhishma Ekadasi day, the king and his priests installed the idols and built the temple on Swetachalam hill. Because the idols were recovered from the pond, the shrine was named Ramatheertham.

By Air: The nearest international airport is at Visakhapatnam, which is approximately 80 km away.
