Описание к видео The last one really was a crossover | Christianity as seen by Chinese Painters

Chinese Christian art has a rich history that began as early as the Tang Dynasty (7th–9th centuries) when Nestorian Christians first arrived in China. This early Christian presence was marked by the creation of religious symbols that incorporated elements of Persian and Byzantine art. However, the significant development of Chinese Christian art began during the Ming and Qing Dynasties (16th–19th centuries) with the arrival of Jesuit missionaries like Matteo Ricci. They blended Chinese artistic traditions with European Christian themes, often depicting biblical figures in Chinese robes and placing them within familiar Chinese landscapes. This fusion created a distinctive style that made Christianity more relatable to the Chinese population.

In the 20th century, especially after the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976), Chinese Christian art experienced both suppression and revival. Protestant missionaries produced Christian imagery through woodcuts and lithographs, and in the early 20th century, Chinese artists began to explore Christian themes using traditional Chinese painting techniques. Today, contemporary Chinese Christian art continues to evolve, often reflecting both modern art practices and traditional Chinese influences.
