CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A local program is looking for a few good people with pets to help change lives.

They are called Canines for Christ, and they minister to people who otherwise might miss out on the joy of being around animals. It started with just a few people who wanted to minister to others with their pets. And now, founder Bill Fox says they have over 400 teams.

"[It's called] 'for Christ' because Christ provides unconditional love to everyone, and this is what our dogs do," Fox said.

The dogs, along with their owners, are put through several weeks of training. Once certified, they make regular visits to area health centers and also see people who live in places like Brookdale Kenwood.

"They just bring so much joy here. It's amazing; we love it," said Jennifer Frank of Brookdale Kenwood.

The people say the dogs are the ministers while the owners, and those they visit, receive the blessings. Karina Flood visits with her pup Murphy.

"I know that if he's gotten someone to smile, he's done his job," said Flood. "He is a lover. He likes to kiss everybody."

"It's just spreading the love and hope and compassion of the Lord. They seem to add so much to people's lives," said participant John Connor.

"I really like the fact that he visits with me," said resident Shirley.

It's kind of easy to see why all dogs go to heaven.

Canines for Christ also visits local libraries with the pets to encourage kids to read and helps Boy Scout and Girl Scout education with pet safety.
