*Eagles Top Cowboys 24-20 in Season Opener Behind Hurts, Barkley and Clutch Defense*

PHILADELPHIA – The defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles opened the NFL’s 106th season with a statement, grinding out a 24-20 victory over the rival Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field.

The win carried historic significance for head coach Nick Sirianni. According to Elias Sports, Sirianni became just the eighth head coach in league history to begin his career with five straight season-opening wins, joining Jim Harbaugh, Sean McVay, John Harbaugh, Mike Shanahan, Raymond Berry, George Allen and Potsy Clark.

The Eagles’ dominance on kickoff weekend continued as well. Philadelphia is one of only four teams undefeated in Week 1 since 2021, joining Miami, New Orleans and Tampa Bay. Since 2006, the Eagles own the NFL’s best season-opening record at 16-4 (.800), including a league-best 13-2 (.867) mark since 2011.

Thursday’s win was also Philadelphia’s 11th straight at home (including playoffs). The Eagles’ 25-10 (.714) home record since 2021 ranks third in the NFL, trailing only Buffalo and Kansas City. At Lincoln Financial Field since 2022, the Eagles are now 22-5 (.815), second only to Buffalo. In primetime home games, Philadelphia has won eight of its last 10.

Against Dallas, the Eagles extended their dominance with a third straight win over the Cowboys, and their fifth victory in the last seven meetings.

*How It Happened*

Jalen Hurts and the Eagles’ offense came out sharp, marching 70 yards on the opening drive. A 16-yard run from Saquon Barkley and a 19-yard grab by rookie Will Shipley set up Hurts’ 3-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7-7.

In the second quarter, Hurts struck again. The quarterback capped a 12-play, 65-yard drive with an 8-yard touchdown run, giving him his 16th career game with multiple rushing TDs — the most ever by an NFL quarterback. Hurts now has 57 rushing scores in his career, trailing only Cam Newton (75) and Josh Allen (65) among QBs.

With under a minute left in the half, Barkley powered in from 10 yards out to put the Eagles back on top, 21-17. It marked the first time Philadelphia rushed for three touchdowns in the first half since a 2022 win over Green Bay.

Hurts also showed off his arm, connecting with Jahan Dotson for a 51-yard strike — Dotson’s longest reception since 2022. The play made Hurts the NFL leader since 2020 with six games featuring both 2+ rushing TDs and a completion of 50+ yards.

Jake Elliott extended the lead in the third quarter with a booming 58-yard field goal, the 28th of 50+ yards in his career — a franchise record.

Clinging to a 24-20 lead late, Philadelphia’s defense sealed the game. Rookie Jihaad Campbell forced a fumble from former Eagle Miles Sanders at the Philadelphia 11, and Quinyon Mitchell recovered to end Dallas’ last serious threat.

On special teams, punter Braden Mann flipped the field repeatedly, averaging 48.7 yards on three punts, with two downed inside the 20.

*Looking Ahead*

The Eagles will now ride momentum from their season-opening win into Week 2, while the Cowboys search for answers after another tough loss in Philadelphia.
