C. R. Patterson and Sons, the first African American car company in the U.S. competed against Ford’s Model T with its Patterson-Greenfield that included a 4-CYL Continental engine. This entrepreneurial story began with Charles Richard Patterson born into slavery. He escaped in 1861 and built a successful horse carriage business that later transitioned into his automobile business.
