Wetlands work wonders

Описание к видео Wetlands work wonders

The Polish Birds Association (today "Jestem na pTAK" Association) decided to do a beaver job - stop the water in the ‘Warta River Mouth’ National Park, in the north-west of Poland. Just under 300 years ago, some of the richest and most fertile wetlands in Europe covered this area.
Unfortunately, by the decision of the German Emperor Frederick the Great, the extensive wetlands were drained.
Over the years, the old drainage system ceased to function, and the area of today's Northern Polder in the National Park fell into oblivion. It did not serve either people or nature.
However, the project "Wetlands work wonders!" has changed a lot.
Thanks to the funds of the European Commission and the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, as well as dedicated naturalists from the Polish Birds Association and the ‘Warta River Mouth’ National Park, people, just like beavers, have built a network of canals, sluices, and weirs.
A total of over 160 kilometers of watercourses, 47 culverts and sluices, and four weirs with fish passes, which connected nearly three thousand hectares of wet meadows and alder forests. Thus, Polder came back to life!
