For the newly founded city of Manila in the Philippines, Spanish explorer and governor Miguel López de Legazpi constructed the fortification known as Fort Santiago in 1571. The defense fort is situated in Manila's walled district of Intramuros. One of Manila's most significant historical sites is the fort.
