What does it mean to prompt a healthcare provider? Asking relevant questions and making simple requests can help otherwise well-meaning practitioners bring their A-game by reminding them of important aspects of your care, recapturing an undivided attention which may have strayed for any number of distracting reasons, and forcing them to stop and consider–or reconsider–the diagnostic and treatment process more carefully, as it applies to you.

Many practitioners can usually do better than they might normally at the end of a long day, or at the wrong moment, or in the wrong context, by simply interacting with a patient who is calm, well-prepared and well-organized, with good questions and reasonable requests. Treatment should be a collaborative process; resist unilateral decision-making and the dismissal of bona fide symptoms by being assertive, and being the best patient you can be, and it will make a difference.

This video is part two of a two-part series on patient self-advocacy, in which I discuss the importance of effective doctor-patient communication, and some of the major areas in which mental healthcare providers go astray: rushing appointments; inadequate explanations, or the excessive use of medicalese; failing to verify and align definitions when patients use jargon; failing to involve the patient in taking decisions when there are options (unilateral decision-making); and dismissing symptoms, sometimes due to bias in the mind of the provider. This video explores what patients can do to offset, minimize, or sidestep these pitfalls altogether, how patients can help their providers to sidestep them, by effective and strategic self-advocacy.
