In this MLP custom tutorial, we'll make Aria Blaze from the My Little Pony Equestria Girls Rainbow Rocks movie. We'll use a brushable pony figure as the base, sculpt her mane, tail & accessories with clay, and then paint them with acrylics.

My goal is not only to turn toys into artwork, but also make them last "nearly" forever. So, I've been experimenting over the years with many different supplies & brands and I'm now confident to share with you my favorites. Keep in mind, some tools are very sharp and are not suitable for kids.
Essential supplies I use for every custom:
1) G4 MLP Pony Figures - https://ebay.us/vmPLO4
Retail stores no longer sell previous generation of brushable ponies, but you can find them in customizable condition on eBay. Give them a good scrub with warm soapy water and let them fully dry before you start customizing.
2) Oven-Bake Clay - https://bit.ly/STclay1
My favorite clay to use especially to sculpt parts, such as the mane and tail, that I can take off the pony to bake. It's easy to work with and doesn't cure until baked.
3) Self-Hardening Clay - https://bit.ly/STclay2
I use epoxy clay to sculpt parts, such as clothing and accessories, that I can't take off the figures to bake. Easy to shape & texture, blends well onto figures & doesn't shrink. Must wear nitrile gloves and work in well-ventilated area when combining parts A and B.
4) Nitrile Gloves - https://bit.ly/STgloves
Protect your hands from chemicals when mixing epoxy. Poly, latex, and vinyl gloves are not chemical resistant.
5) Clay Roller - https://bit.ly/STroller
Use to condition clay and create smooth sheets and blocks.
6) Clay Blades - https://bit.ly/STblades
Long 6.5" to 7.5" blades make perfectly straight or curved edges in sheets and blocks of clay. Extremely sharp so use with caution!
7) Craft Knife - https://bit.ly/STknife
One-inch long blade for making precise, clean cuts in clay. Extremely sharp so use with caution!
8) Sculpting Tool - https://bit.ly/STsculpt
My favorite tool because it can do so much--shape, blend, smooth, texture, trace, and cut.
9) Acrylic Paint - https://bit.ly/STpaint
Made with high-quality pigments and has a beautiful, matte finish. There are over 70 colors available, but you can mix nearly all the colors you'll need with less than 10 colors. See the course I recommend below to learn the secrets to color mixing.
10) Acrylic Medium - https://bit.ly/STmed
Most acrylic paints are thick and will leave brushstrokes if not thinned down. However, thinning down with water greatly reduces the paint's pigment load and its ability to stick to surfaces. Mix several drops of this medium into your acrylics to get a smooth coverage without affecting the paint's quality.
11) Paintbrushes - https://bit.ly/STbrushset
Choose flats for wide areas, and rounds for tight areas and fine lines.
12) Paint Palette - https://bit.ly/STpalette
Reusable 10-well palette for mixing small amount of paint for immediate use.
13) Paint Cups - https://bit.ly/STpaintcups
For mixing larger amount of paint. Can be stored up to a month without drying out if cups are covered with cling wrap before snapping on lids.
14) Matte Varnish - https://bit.ly/STvarnish
Protect your painted figures from heat, yellowing, and chipping. Mix well, apply very thin layers & allow to fully dry between layers, otherwise your figures will have a frosted finish instead of matte. Can be thinned down with the acrylic medium (#10) on this list.

Why I don't recommend buying branded products on Amazon:
• May be fake knock-off or counterfeit of the brand. Products are manufactured to look identical to the original by factories in China not associated with the brand. They use cheap, low quality, unregulated materials that doesn't function as it should and may even pose health and safety risks: • Why Amazon Has So Many Counterfeit Goods
• Many product reviews can't be trusted: • Why Amazon Has A Fake Review Problem
