High school friends Matt Johnson and Owen Williams embark on a class project to create a mockumentary about bullying, titling it The Dirties. Initially intended as a cinema verité-style exploration of high school cruelty, the project is deeply personal—Matt and Owen are themselves frequent targets of bullying. While navigating their outsider status, they also hope to reconnect with Chrissy, a popular girl from their childhood who once showed interest in Owen. As filming progresses and the first cut is shown to their teacher, Mr. Muldoon, the friends begin to confront the unsettling ways the project reflects their own experiences, forcing them to grapple with their feelings about friendship, revenge, and the darker side of high school life.
