Описание к видео Mysterious Trees of India You Can't Touch The Enigmatic Realm of India's Forbidden Trees

Many "forbidden" or mysterious trees in India are not necessarily off-limits due to physical barriers, but rather because of deep-rooted cultural beliefs, superstitions, or toxic properties. Some are forbidden by tradition, while others are dangerous to approach.
Trees forbidden by folklore and superstition
The Peepal tree (Ficus religiosa)
Although the Peepal is one of India's most sacred trees, it is traditionally believed that people should not sit under it at night.
The legend: It is said that spirits and ghosts, especially malevolent ones, inhabit the tree after sunset.
The logic: The traditional superstition has a scientific basis. During the day, the Peepal and other trees perform photosynthesis and produce oxygen. At night, however, they respire, releasing carbon dioxide. The concentration of CO2 under a dense Peepal tree canopy could cause discomfort to someone sitting underneath for too long.
The Ghost Tree (Sterculia urens)
Known as the bhutyā (ghost) tree in Marathi, this deciduous tree is known for its pale, glowing bark that shimmers in the moonlight.
The legend: Its eerie appearance at night has led to associations with spirits and paranormal activity. The tree's name and appearance have created local folklore and fascination.
The threat: It is not explicitly "forbidden" but is approached with caution due to its ghostly reputation.
The Great Banyan Tree of Shibpur
Found in the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanical Garden in West Bengal, this is one of the world's largest trees, resembling a small forest with its many prop roots.
The legend: Local folklore and night guards report hearing unexplained "whispering sounds" and chanting coming from the tree's canopy after midnight. Some believe the sounds are the voices of ancient sages who meditated there, while others associate them with spirits.
The logic: Botanists suggest the wind passing through the complex network of aerial roots may create unique echoing and whistling noises, but the paranormal explanation persists in local legend.
Trees that are genuinely dangerous to touch
The Suicide Tree (Cerbera odollam)
This tree is native to India and found predominantly in the coastal regions of Kerala.
The danger: All parts of the tree, especially its fruit, are highly poisonous. The fruit's seeds contain cardenolides, which can be fatal if ingested, earning it the ominous name "suicide tree". A study found that this tree was responsible for half of the plant poisoning deaths in Kerala.
The Strychnine Tree (Strychnos nux-vomica)
Native to India and Southeast Asia, this is one of the world's most poisonous trees.
The danger: Touching any part of the tree can be harmful. Its seeds contain the highly toxic alkaloids strychnine and brucine, which can block nerve signals in the spinal cord, causing involuntary spasms, convulsions, and even death.
The Sandbox Tree (Hura crepitans)
While not native to India, this tree is found in some parts of the country and is extremely dangerous.
The danger: This tree is covered in sharp, pointed spines that can cause severe injury. Its milky sap is poisonous and can cause skin rashes. It also has explosive fruits that can shoot their seeds out at speeds of up to 150 miles per hour
