Damaging wind is actually the most common type of severe weather we deal with across north and central Georgia. It can happen any time of year, but it really ramps up in July, when quick-hitting summer thunderstorms can produce strong downbursts. Looking at records from 1950 to 2010, damaging winds were responsible for 18 fatalities and more than 300 injuries in our part of the state — a reminder that these storms shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Hail is another threat that can pop up during any month, but it’s most likely in the spring. May is the peak month for hail across north and central Georgia, with April close behind. Most hailstones here are about one to two inches in diameter, but we’ve seen some extremes. In fact, softball-sized hail — around 4.5 inches — has been recorded in north Georgia four separate times.
