Filter: consciously or unconsciously eliminating some information/possibilities from consideration, sometimes information that may be more valuable than you think. For example, when looking for checks or captures, eliminating any that superficially don't look safe can often filter out any potentially dangerous sacrifices.

Mask: an action or information that "blocks out" other action/information, where that second information may be valuable. For example, playing too slowly and not leaving enough time to play the endgame well may mask any endgame proficiency or deficiencies.
