Two vessels from the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), an international aid initiative, departed from Ermoupolis port on the Greek island of Syros on Sunday (September 14), heading for Gaza in a bid to challenge Israel’s naval blockade. Activists on board the 'Oxygen' boat waved as supporters on the dock chanted and lit smoke grenades in farewell. Earlier, a few hundred people had gathered at the port to demonstrate their support to the mission and their solidarity to the Palestinian people, holding flags and banners and chanting slogans such as “Freedom to Palestine”. GSF said on Wednesday (September 10) that one of its boats was attacked by a drone at a Tunisian port, the second such strike in two days. Organisers described the attacks as deliberate attempts by Israel to disrupt the mission. The GSF is a “a coordinated, nonviolent fleet of mostly small vessels sailing from ports across the Mediterranean to break the Israeli occupation's illegal siege on Gaza,” according to its website and includes hundreds of activists from over 40 countries including Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and Portuguese left-wing politician Mariana Mortagua.
