A Weekend in Hakone | Japanese Ryokan & Kaiseki Ryori | Japan Cheap Food & Travel

If you’re spending a weekend in Hakone, I highly recommend staying overnight at a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn. They can be a little expensive but definitely an experience worth trying at least once. You get to spend the night in a traditional Japanese room with tatami mats, sleep on futons and relax in an onsen (or many of them!). But the experience I always look forward to the most at a ryokan is eating kaiseki ryori, which is a traditional multi-course Japanese fine dining banquet using local and seasonal ingredients. When the entire meticulously prepared banquet is laid out in front of you, it is truly a sight to behold and the taste is also absolutely delicious! It’s hard to explain exactly what kaiseki ryori is, since every meal is different as it depends on the chef’s style and ingredients available, so the best thing to do is see and taste for yourself!
