AREA TERMS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING:
Plinth: Part of the building that rises above the foundation level, is called plinth.
Plinth area: Total covered area of the building at the plinth level/ basement level is called plinth area.
Plot area: The area with in the boundary is called plot area. It is the total space allocated for the building project.
Set back area: The empty space around the building is called set back area.
Setback area = Plot area – Plinth area
Floor area: Total area of floor including the exterior wall is called floor area.Floor area ratio (FAR)= Gross floor area of building/Plot area
Carpet area: The area that can be used to spread a carpet inside the building.It is the net usable area of the building. It exclude corridor, balcony,terrace, etc
Office building- 60% -70% of plinth area
Residential building- 50% - 65% of plinth area
Circulation area: It is the area of access in a building. It is used to move from one room to another
(1) Horizontal circulation area- veranda, corridor, passage, etc.
(2) Vertical circulation area- stair, lift, etc
Built up area: Built up area is the carpet area + area occupied by walls
Super built up area: Built up area + common areas in the complex
