October 9th is Hangeul Day... a day to celebrate the creation of the Korean alphabet.
South Korea's Culture Ministry recommends anyone interested in learning about Hangeul, its history and significance,... to visit the National Hangeul Museum.
Our Kim Jung-sil went there to find out about a special interactive exhibit.
24 letters... of the Korean alphabet, Hangeul, are dancing around.
How is it that these letters can perfectly represent the sounds of the Korean language?
Hangeul is one of Korea's national treasures,... acclaimed around the world for its linguistic and cultural value.

"It was amazing to find out how Hangeul was made."

"I was glad to learn more about King Sejong, and I'm grateful that he created Hangeul."


"I'm half Korean and half Canadian. My dad's from Canada, and my mom is a Korean teacher. Since I've been here, I've learned more about Hangeul and how precious it is to this country."

One of the highlights of this year's exhibition... is a sculpture of the Haerye Edition of the Hunminjeongeum.
"This acrylic sculpture is based on 33 pages of Hunminjeongeum Manuscript. It's a book that explains how to use what became the basis of the Korean written language, Hangeul."
In the early days, when Korean was mostly written in Chinese characters, some people had a prejudice against Hangeul, saying it was only for children and women,... but here you can see... not only the King, but people from all walks of life used Hangeul for their letters.
Another special exhibition is this interactive book where you can see how some words were written in the early days of Hangeul.
If you touch one of these unfamiliar words or unusual spellings, on the next page, you'll see its meaning along with a picture.

This permanent exhibition at the National Hangeul Museum is free of charge and is open every day.
