Mexico is one of the world's most dangerous countries for the media, ranking 143rd in the World Press Freedom Index. The country has the highest abuse score, a measure of abuses and violence against reporters, in Latin America, and connections between organized crime and government officials threaten journalists who cover sensitive topics. Critics have stated that Mexico has a grave freedom of expression crisis and have called out the administration's failure to recognize the seriousness of the problem. Although the mañaneras provide the media and the public with unprecedented access, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has attacked the media on multiple occasions. Additionally, while AMLO has declared combatting corruption to be his top priority since taking office, the administration has not allocated sufficient resources to combat violence against journalists.
