What is the meaning of a dream?

1: a cherished aspiration, ambition, or ideal.
2: a vision voluntarily indulged in while awake; daydream; reverie.

Definitions that were too kind, too gentle, for the likes of someone such as I—for the ‘person’ I saw reflected in the mirror. The reflective surface showed me what could only be described as a grotesque amalgamation of depravity and greed, mixed with small measures of flesh, guts, and bone, before being molded into something that vaguely resembled the shape of a normal human being.

“All of this was my fault. I did something wrong and I am so sorry.”

My hands, shaky as they were, reflected on the actions I've taken thus far. The dream that I was promised—no, the dream that I was granted; beautiful, picturesque, and all things good, only to be turned into a nightmare akin to hell due to my own insatiable desire for love and affection.
So I ask this once again as I force myself to come face-to-face with the world around me, bodies of those I once cherished lying motionless on the ground, suspended from their roles within the never-ending play I trapped them in: what is the meaning of a dream?

3: an unrealistic or self-deluding fantasy.
