What do you do if you hanker for a Range Rover, but you want something bigger and plusher than an Evoque, yet you can’t stretch to the considerably bigger and considerably more expensive Range Rover Sport? Well, once upon a time, you’d have been scuppered, but now, you can just buy a Range Rover Velar, which sits bang in the middle of its stablemates in term of both size and price.

Underneath, it shares the same platform as the sporty Jaguar F-Pace, but with the Velar, the focus is more on luxury and style. This mid-range diesel version, the D240, has a 2.0-litre twin-turbo engine that generates 237bhp, and allows the car to spring from 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds, all while returning an official average fuel economy of 48.7mpg

The Range Rover Velar is something of a mixed proposition. On the one hand, it’s an appealing and stylish SUV that’s well equipped, comfortable, and good to drive. However, it is expensive in certain guises, and can quickly end up costing as much as a more upmarket or higher-performance alternatives.

Many may be put off by the potential for poor reliability, which could torpedo an otherwise enjoyable ownership experience. Some may also find the occasionally unresponsive media system annoying.

In any case, the Velar is a very smart SUV thanks to its coupe-like roofline and flush-fitting, electrically retracting doorhandles, and it delivers on the driving experience and luxury front. If you’re sold on the styling, and perhaps want something with real off-road credentials, then it’s worth a look.
