What You'll Learn:

📈 Building the Base Line Chart
Start by creating a line chart that displays the sum of sales by month. We'll demonstrate how to set up your data fields correctly, ensuring that your month of order date and sum of sales are accurately represented in your visualization.

🔧 Creating the Running Total Calculated Field
Learn how to create a calculated field named "Running Total" using the RUNNING_SUM function. This calculation will help you visualize the cumulative sum of sales over each month.

📊 Applying the Running Total to Your View
Discover how to drag the "Running Total" field into your view to display the running sum alongside your existing sales data. This will allow you to see the progression of sales over time.

📌 Handling Multiple Dimensions
Understand how to manage running totals when multiple dimensions, such as Region, are present in your view. We'll show you how to edit table calculations and configure specific dimensions to ensure accurate running totals for each region.

📉 Creating Dual Axis Charts
Learn how to convert your running total into a dual axis chart. We'll guide you through making the running total an area chart and keeping the original sales as a line chart, providing a comprehensive visualization of both metrics.

📊 Implementing Running Averages, Min, and Max
Explore how to create additional calculated fields for running averages, running minimums, and running maximums. We'll demonstrate how to modify your calculations to display these metrics, enhancing your data analysis with different perspectives.

🎨 Customizing Your Visualizations
Enhance your charts by adjusting colors, line styles, and other formatting options to make your running totals and other metrics stand out. We'll cover tips on making your visualizations both informative and aesthetically pleasing.

✅ Finalizing and Testing Your Dashboard
Finalize your running total visualizations by verifying the accuracy of your calculations and ensuring that your charts are properly aligned. We'll walk you through testing your dashboard to confirm that all elements function as intended.

How do you use running total and calculate it in tableau in this example I have sum of sales by month and I have the running total sum of sales by month in addition to running some you can also do running average running Min and running Max let's take a look at how to do that in tableau I have a line chart built with sum of sales by month let's take a look at how to add a running total now write a calculated field and call it running total

Calculation is going to be running underscore sum

And then pass in sum of sales

Let's click apply and okay

Drag running sum into the view and you'll see I have the running sum of sum of sales if I had a field like region in the view let's put that on rows I would need to make sure the running sum is commuted for each region so let's edit the table calculation

And make sure under specific dimensions region is unchecked when region is unchecked it means you are calculating the running total for each region a long month at Region bin checked the line would be the same for each region so the running total goes up to 2.2 million and this running total goes up to 2.2 million as well it's uncheck region close it up

Let's make this into dual axis and then turn it into running average running bin and running Max click on the drop down I'm running total click dual access I'm going to change running total to be an area chart

And leave some with sales as a line let's go into running total and change it to a running average
