As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with shades of orange and pink, I found myself in the heart of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, ready to immerse myself in the vibrant festivities of Navratri. Little did I know, this would be a journey filled with dance, delicious food, and a deep dive into a rich cultural heritage.
As a newcomer, I was eager to learn the traditional dance form known as Garba. It’s not just a dance; it’s a celebration of life, love, and devotion. The circular formations and synchronized movements were mesmerizing. On my first evening, I joined a local Garba class, where enthusiastic dancers of all ages welcomed me with open arms. With a little guidance, I learned the basic steps: the graceful hand movements, the twirling, and the infectious energy that comes from dancing in a circle with friends and family.

The best part? It’s incredibly easy to join in. Everyone dances together, creating an atmosphere of unity and joy. As I twirled and clapped along, I felt a sense of belonging that transcended cultural boundaries.
No celebration in Gujarat is complete without indulging in its culinary delights. After an evening of dancing, I explored the street food stalls that lined the streets, each offering a tantalizing array of snacks. I started with dhokla, a fluffy steamed cake made from chickpea flour, and khandvi, delicate rolls of spiced gram flour. Each bite was a burst of flavor, showcasing the region’s love for spices.

Next up was pani puri, crispy hollow puris filled with tangy tamarind water and spicy fillings—a must-try for anyone visiting Gujarat. As I savored each bite, I chatted with locals who enthusiastically shared their favorite dishes, adding to the communal spirit of the festival.

To round off my culinary journey, I couldn’t resist trying khichdi, a comforting mix of rice and lentils, often served during Navratri as a symbol of purity and simplicity. Each dish told a story, reflecting the rich tapestry of Gujarati cuisine.
