I am a dermatologist who regularly sees both amazing results and unfortunate side effects from microneedling.
If you’ve heard terms like Dermapen, microneedling, dermarollers, mesotherapy, or PRP facials, but don’t really know which one is right for you (or if they even work at all) – this video will clear everything up.
In this video, I’ve broken it all down so you can make an informed decision, whether you’re booking a clinic session or considering an at-home dermaroller.

Q: What is microneedling?
Microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy or skin needling) is a minimally invasive procedure that uses fine, sterile needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. This stimulates collagen and elastin production and enhances absorption of active ingredients like peptides or medications.
Q: What is mesotherapy?
Mesotherapy is a broader term often used interchangeably with microneedling, but technically it refers to the delivery of active substances (like vitamins, peptides, PRP, minoxidil, or biotin) into the skin using microinjections or microneedling devices.
Q: What can microneedling treat?
Acne scars, open pores, fine lines, wrinkles, stretch marks, melasma, and hair thinning. It can improve skin texture and tone by enhancing collagen production and boosting active ingredient absorption.
Q: How does microneedling help with hair loss?
By creating microchannels in the scalp, it improves blood flow and allows direct delivery of medications like minoxidil, peptides, finasteride, or PRP to the hair follicles — making them more effective.
Q: Is microneedling safe for darker skin tones?
Yes, traditional microneedling (without heat) is considered safe. MNRF or chemical peels can sometimes lead to hyperpigmentation in Fitzpatrick skin types IV–VI.
Q: Is at-home microneedling with dermarollers safe?
Not recommended. At-home dermarollers often cause more harm than good — including infections, skin tearing, and the spread of warts or herpes. They are frequently reused without proper sterilization, and most have blunt needles.
Q: Can microneedling worsen infections or skin conditions?
Yes. It must be avoided if you have active acne, cold sores, fungal or bacterial infections, seborrheic dermatitis, or chronic inflammatory conditions like vitiligo or psoriasis.
Q: What happens during a professional microneedling session?
Your face is cleansed, then numbing cream is applied for 30–60 minutes. Microneedling is performed with a dermapen in a stamping motion with overlap. Depth and speed are adjusted based on the area and condition. The session usually lasts 10–20 minutes.
Q: What does recovery look like after microneedling?
Day 1–2: Redness and warmth
Day 2–3: Rough, grainy skin texture
Day 4–6: Peeling
Day 6+: Skin appears normal again
Q: How many sessions are needed?
For glow/exfoliation: 1–2 sessions
For acne scars or mature skin: 4–6 sessions
For pores or hair growth: Minimum 3 sessions
Results depend on skin type, age, and condition.
Q: Are the results of microneedling permanent?
Yes — results are long-lasting once a full treatment course is completed. Unlike injectables, microneedling boosts your body’s own collagen production, so you won’t need frequent touch-ups.
