Are you suffering from any of the following painful conditions: low back pain, neck pain, nerve injury pain, shoulder or knee pain, migraine, fibromyalgia, or maybe the more dreadful pelvic pain?

My name is Dr Deepak Ravindran and I am a pain consultant who has been practicing for the last 10 years. The really sad and sometime disappointing thing is when patients come to see me after four to six years of suffering with their pain. And they tell me that a pain clinic did not exist and that they did not know that a pain clinic or a pain consultant was actually there! And it is not your fault and it is not even the GP’s (General Practitioner’s) fault. It’s because the speciality of the pain medicine has only been there for the last 50 years. Although the condition of chronic pain had been around for many centuries, it’s only recently that the Faculty of Pain Medicine in UK celebrated their tenth anniversary.

So, it has been recognised that we needed a speciality and we need pain consultants who are trained and qualified to look at the whole condition, look at the whole person and provide treatment strategies – newer, more effective treatment strategies that can make a difference to your quality of life, and can sometimes completely take away the pain.

What are you waiting for then? You need to take matters in your hands. You need to understand how to manage your pain. What strategies are there for it to be helped, and what are the options that you have not tried, or you would like to try? Because you need to know what the benefits of the treatments are, what risks are there and what other alternatives are there? And to do this, it is going to be a pain specialist and consultant who can help you.

So, you need to go to your GP and ask them to refer you to the nearest pain clinic and consultant. And if that's not feasible, you need to consider getting a private appointment to at least understand your options and see what are the new treatment strategies that are available to you. Because it's not anymore about physiotherapy and hydrotherapy and a few medications.

You now can have access to a whole other set of complementary therapies. You can get access to so many other drugs that have been introduced that could potentially make a difference. There are now newer treatments and injections and interventions using electricity and neuromodulation that could make a difference and help relieve the pain.
