In India, the number of marriages a person can legally have depends on the laws governing marriage, which vary based on religion and personal laws.
Hindu Marriage Act, 1955: According to this law, a person can only be married to one person at a time. Bigamy (marrying someone else while already being married) is illegal under this Act, unless the first spouse has passed away or a legal divorce has been granted. So, for most people in India, marriage laws generally limit them to one spouse at a time.
Muslim Law: In Islam, a Muslim man can marry up to four wives at the same time, provided that he treats them equally and fairly. However, a Muslim woman can only have one husband at a time.
Christian Marriage Act, 1872: Similar to the Hindu Marriage Act, under this law, a Christian can only have one spouse at a time. Bigamy is prohibited.
Special Marriage Act, 1954: This Act allows people from different religions to marry under a civil marriage contract. Like the Hindu Marriage Act, it allows only one spouse at a time and prohibits bigamy.
