As Washington County’s population grows, the rise of short-term rentals is creating a tug-of-war between the booming tourism economy and the pressing need for affordable housing.

Local officials and experts say that unchecked growth in STRs could worsen an already strained housing market, leaving many families priced out of the area.

Washington County’s STR market has surged in recent years. According to Dejan Eskic, a researcher at the University of Utah’s Gardner Policy Institute, the county had just over 3,100 STR listings in 2022.
