The Coimbatore Corporation is testing a new kind of umbrella to help its cleaning staff.

This pilot program gives wearable umbrellas to conservancy workers to protect them from the sun and rain while they clean the streets. The gear is designed to be worn like a backpack, which keeps the workers' hands free so they can easily do their jobs.

This hands-free umbrella is expected to provide more comfort and make it easier for staff to move around, especially during bad weather.

As part of the initial phase, 20 workers were given the gear for a trial period of one to two weeks. The umbrellas, which each cost about ₹2,000, were bought from small local businesses.

After the trial, the Corporation will collect feedback from the workers. If the feedback is positive and the umbrellas work well, the city may buy more to give to a larger number of its cleaning staff.

This initiative shows the city's effort to improve working conditions and safety for its essential workers.
