If you’re planning to buy health insurance in India, chances are you’ve Googled these questions a hundred times already. Can I port my health insurance? Should I worry about my plan lapsing? Does a pre-existing condition mean I won’t get a good policy? What if I go abroad for a year? These are the kind of doubts that confuse most buyers — and in today’s video, we’re answering the Top 20 most commonly asked health insurance questions to make your journey simple.

Let’s talk about one of the most common concerns — what if you develop a new health issue after buying your policy? Don’t worry — it won’t affect your existing policy. As long as you renew on time, your health insurance provider cannot apply fresh waiting periods or re-evaluate your health. That’s why it's crucial to never let your policy lapse and always disclose new health issues.

Another common myth? That critical illness plans can replace regular medical insurance in India. That’s not true. Critical illness policies only cover a fixed list of serious diseases — but they don’t reimburse hospital bills or routine treatments. You still need a base health insurance plan to cover actual costs — for surgeries, room rent, tests, etc. This is why most people choose a comprehensive health insurance plan in India and pair it with optional riders instead of standalone CI plans.

People also worry about missing a premium — but you typically get a grace period of 15–30 days. Still, it’s best not to delay. If you miss the window, the policy lapses and you lose all waiting period benefits. Reapplying means going through underwriting again and disclosing your entire medical history from scratch — often at a higher premium.

What about dental and cosmetic treatments? In general, these aren’t covered unless medically necessary due to accidents. If you want cosmetic or dental work for aesthetic reasons, you’ll have to pay out-of-pocket — most best health insurance plans in India do not include these unless explicitly stated.

Planning to stay abroad for a few months or years? Regular Indian health insurance usually won’t cover you outside India — except in emergency situations. Even then, caps apply and treatments must be post-approved. If you’re going abroad long-term, get local health insurance. For short trips, opt for travel insurance.

Now let’s say your insurance company suddenly discontinues your plan. What then? Don’t panic — IRDAI mandates that the insurer must offer you migration options to another similar plan. You won’t lose your coverage or waiting period credits, and you can even port to another insurer altogether if you're unhappy.

Also, don’t forget to update your KYC — Aadhaar, PAN, address. Missing documents can delay claims or renewals. IRDAI now requires full KYC even for medical insurance in India — and failure to comply could risk policy servicing or payouts.

Another question we get all the time: Should you switch aging parents from a family floater to an individual policy? The short answer — yes, in most cases. Parents tend to file more claims, which can exhaust the floater limit, leaving younger members underinsured. Keeping separate policies helps protect everyone better.

What if you’re receiving treatment at home — will your health insurance cover it? In some cases, yes. Domiciliary hospitalization is allowed if the patient can't be moved to a hospital or beds aren't available. But the treatment must be at least 72 hours long and certified by a doctor. Many best medical insurance plans in India allow this, but claims need solid documentation.
