As someone who was alive during what Americans call the Vietnam War and what Vietnamese call the American War, I was intrigued about the possibility of visiting some of the important sites, once I was in the country. I booked a tour out of Hue to see some key locations.

That tour took me to the Quang Tri Ancient Citadel, the Khe Sahn Combat Base, the DMZ at the Hien Luong Bridge and to the tunnels at Vinh Moc. I also went to several places, on my own, that played a role during the war.

It was fascinating, but heart-breaking to be in the areas where the conflict was at its most ferocious. I learned a lot, however, and came away feeling sympathy for all those who were involved, both combatants and civilians.
