We live at a time of the greatest progress amongst the global poor in human history. Never before have so many people in so many developing countries made so much progress in reducing poverty, improving health, increasing incomes, expanding health, reducing conflict, and encouraging democracy. The Great Surge tells the story of this unprecedented progress over the last two decades, why it happened, and what it may portend for the future. This event welcomes a talk from the author, Steven Radelet, Donald F. McHenry Chair in Global Human Development in Georgetown's School of Foreign Service, with comments by Dr. Joel S. Hellman,
Dean of the School of Foreign Service.

This event is part of the university's Global Futures Initiative, which is examining “The Global Future of Governance” this semester. New SFS Dean Joel Hellman began the conversation in September, and leaders of international organizations including the World Health Organization and UN High Commissioner for Refugees have also delivered lectures about global governance on campus.
