With a new mill comes a new set of tooling and equipment. Besides the fly cutters, end mills, adapters, vises. There needs to be an accurate way to position work in a vise for angled cuts. One of the methods is using a sine bar. There are some substitutes such as rotating the head of the mill or using a tilting table. How do you do it without a massive expensive set of angle gauge blocks and to a high degree of precision? Watch and I’ll show you the tool that will help accomplish this in conjunction with the information contained in Machinery’s Handbook.

While searching for the Sine bar I stubbled on a nice set of Starrett tools. What a find, a surface gauge and machinist buttons!!! Machinist Buttons are fabulous tool for layout still relevant today and still the only thing that can locate work. This lot also came with a wonderful surface gauge. This surface gauge is a fine example of Starrett’s excellent color case hardening finish.

While modern CNC milling centers are amazing for the maker and home shop machinist, there are some things you simply cannot do without a Lathe. Believe it or not, but the Lathe is known as the mother of all machine tools, for this piece of equipment led to the development of many other machine tools such as the vertical and horizontal milling machines. With proper fixturing, layout, and calculations the Lathe can do it all. It is a keystone piece of equipment in any machine shop whether for commercial or home use. In this video I will be demonstrating the Sherline Lathe “C Package”. I chose this particular Lathe for our project because it had many features, I felt would be beneficial for our build; the Kozo ¾” scale Pennsylvania A-3 Switcher 0-4-0 steam engine.
